I THANK Ong Sor Fern for her article on Jack Neo (What’s Neo, Jack? Life!, Jan 25) and her movie review, Oh Neo, Who Needs Parenting Lessons, on the same day.
I praise her for highlighting his shortcomings. However, her facts and tone give me the impression of a biased opinion.
Most movie critics do not consider what impact their views can generate.
Why do most film reviewers tend to run down homegrown and non-Western productions? Most of the time, I think they do not understand the movies as they have not grasped what the directors are trying to portray.
Neo’s I Not Stupid Too deals with problems like communication among people, not just on the socially relevant issue of juvenile delinquency.
The show started by asking when was the last time you praised someone, followed by when was the last time that you were praised.
To that, I add: Would you die if you praise Neo’s film sky-high?
On the other hand, Neo and his J Team might really die if most Singaporeans believe Ms Ong’s condemnation of his latest production.
For her information, I do not know Neo or any of his production members or the cast. I am just very frustratedat seeing Singaporeans run down their fellow countrymen.
Last year, I attended Jackie Chan’s dialogue session at the new National Library.
He revealed that South Koreans supported their local artists and that only foreign CDs and movies are pirated.
In short, Koreans pay to see their own movies.
Nationalism has economic impact.
If Ms Ong can recall the story of the three blind men and the elephant, she will realize that what she thinks is a lousy show could be an excellent masterpiece to others.
My 12-year-old son and I enjoyed the preview of I Not Stupid Too, and I would give Neo’s effort a five-star rating.
He has improved and this movie is certainly much better than I Not Stupid.
I feel happy for his achievement. If the Government can nurture him, who knows, maybe he can become better than Chan.
But with critics like Ms Ong, no Government official would dare to stick his neck out for Neo.
If Singaporeans do not help their fellow countrymen, who will?
